On December 11, 2017, a Michigan medical malpractice jury awarded a woman $400,000 in total damages, which included $50,000 for permanent scarring and $350,000 for the plaintiff’s past pain and suffering, in a lawsuit that claimed that the defendant plastic surgeon who performed her facelift had botched her surgery.
The Michigan medical malpractice plaintiff alleged that the defendant plastic surgeon performed a facelift procedure on her in November 2013 that included laser resurfacing around her mouth. The plaintiff alleged that the defendant plastic surgeon performed the facelift procedure negligently by thinning her skin excessively and by stitching her skin too tightly, which compromised the blood flow in the affected areas.
Over the course of one month following her facelift surgery, the woman returned to the plastic surgeon’s office on several occasions, complaining of extensive bruising, swelling due to clotted blood, and the loss of skin thickness around her face, which eventually led to the death of skin on her face, according to the woman’s Michigan medical malpractice lawsuit.
Despite the woman’s complaints during follow-up visits, the defendant plastic surgeon allegedly failed to properly diagnose her condition, negligently failed to timely treat her post-operative complications from the facelift procedure, and negligently failed to refer her for proper medical treatment, according to her medical malpractice lawsuit. During the Michigan medical malpractice trial, the jury was able to observe the scarring in the area of the plaintiff’s jawline on both sides of her face.
The defense argued to the jury that the woman caused her own injuries by her wrongful use of a heating pad, which defense the Michigan medical malpractice jury rejected.
The plaintiff’s Michigan medical malpractice attorney stated after the jury’s verdict, “[The defendant plastic surgeon’s] improper surgical technique resulted in large areas of skin death on both sides of [the plaintiff’s] face, which took several months to eventually resolve. As a direct consequence of this botched procedure, [the plaintiff] suffered necrosis – tissue death – resulting in permanent scarring and disfigurement.”
The defendant plastic surgeon states on his website that he is “uniquely qualified to perform cosmetic surgical procedures to improve or enhance the face, breast, and body,” that he “offers genuine, compassionate care to all patients,” and that he “is not only a surgeon but an artist and perfectionist as well. Your desired outcome will be his number one priority.”
