A Florida plastic surgeon and his son, who is also a Florida plastic surgeon, are reportedly facing more than 160 medical malpractice claims that they disfigured their patients as a result of negligently performed breast surgery, with many complaining that they have been left with pain and without feeling in their breasts. One Florida medical malpractice attorney alone represents more than 150 women who are alleging medical malpractice claims against the Florida plastic surgeons.
In October 2015, three former patients filed medical malpractice lawsuits against the plastic surgeons following their breast surgeries, alleging permanent injuries. The women’s medical malpractice attorney questioned at that time if the surgeons had their own financial interests in mind when they performed revision surgeries, billing for both the original surgeries that left their patients with less-than-expected results, and then billing again for revision surgeries.
After a local Florida newspaper reported on the initial medical malpractice filings in December 2015, an additional ten women shared with the newspaper their experiences regarding breast surgeries performed by the Florida plastic surgeons, and more than one hundred forty former patients contacted the Florida medical malpractice attorney who had filed the original two medical malpractice cases in October 2015. Other former patients who were dissatisfied with their surgical results reportedly contacted another Florida medical malpractice law firm, seeking assistance in bringing medical malpractice claims against the Florida plastic surgeons.
Many of the former patients allege that they hired the Florida plastic surgeons for breast reduction surgery or for breast lift surgery after they had given birth. The former patients’ medical malpractice lawyer alleges that some of his clients were left with nipples facing in opposite directions, scarring of their breasts, and pain after their surgery that has not resolved. Some of the patients allegedly were left with larger breasts after their breast reduction surgeries, and some were left with their breasts being of different sizes.
The elder Florida plastic surgeon reportedly had three medical malpractice claims filed against him in the 1990s but details regarding those claims are unavailable. However, in the 1980s, the elder Florida plastic surgeon had official findings made against him on three occasions, according to reports. On one such occasion, he was found to have left a surgical sponge within a patient’s breast and he had removed tissue instead. The sponge was removed by another physician six years later. He apparently was also found to have failed to keep proper medication records.
The Florida plastic surgeons’ lawyers have issued a statement on behalf of their clients in which they stated that their clients ” … are dedicated to providing quality medical care to all of their patients. The allegations being made against [them] are only one side of the story, and we will strongly defend the care provided to these patients.”
