U.S. Statistics For Organ Transplants

As medicine and medical techniques have advanced over the years, organ transplants in the United States have generally increased in number and complexity.

Whereas only 203 lung transplants were performed in 1990, 1,469 were performed in 2007 (2006 one-year survival rate: 82.4%).

2,631 liver transplants were undertaken in 1990; 6,493 were done in 2007 (2006 one-year survival rate: 86.0%).

9,358 kidney transplants were done in 1990; 16,624 were done in 2007 (2006 one-year survival rate: 97.9%).

60 pancreas transplants were done in 1990 while 469 were done in 2007 (2006 one-year survival rate: 95.4%).

While only 1 intestine transplant was attempted in 1990, 198 were completed in 2007 (2006 one-year survival rate: 77.8%).

71 multiple organ transplants were done in 1990; in 2005, 518 were done.

2,095 heart transplants were done in 1990; 2,210 were done in 2007 (2006 one-year survival rate: 87.1%).

The number of people waiting for transplants in 2007: heart (2,613); kidney (76,081); liver (16,311); pancreas (1,617); intestine (230); lung (2,102).

The number of transplant centers performing transplants in 2007: heart – 130 (down from 148 in 1990); kidney – 245 (up from 232 in 1990); liver – 127 (up from 85 in 1990); pancreas – 146 (up from 84 in 1990); intestine – 45; ┬álung – 65 (down from 70 in 1990).
