HealthGrades, an independent source of physician information and hospital quality outcomes, has recently issued the results of a study that found that patients have a 46% lower risk of experiencing a patient safety incident at a top-rated hospital compared to a poorly-rated hospital. The findings were based on the review of 40 million Medicare patient records from 2007 to 2009 to identify preventable medical mistakes.
The study found that patients treated at the top 5% of hospitals were 30% less likely to contract a hospital acquired central-line bloodstream infection and 39% less likely to suffer sepsis after surgery. Almost one in six patients who acquired a bloodstream infection while in the hospital died.
